Veterinary Compounding Medication – Customized for Dogs and Cats
Quick Reference
Basic Information
Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine to combat a range of bacterial infections. It acts by interfering with bacterial DNA synthesis, effectively halting replication and leading to bacterial cell death. Enrofloxacin demonstrates strong efficacy against a variety of pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, E. coli, Enterobacter, Campylobacter, Shigella, Salmonella, and several others, including certain Mycoplasma and Mycobacterium species.
Veterinary Medicine Uses
Infections: Enrofloxacin is effective for treating skin, urinary tract, and respiratory infections, as well as wound-related infections in both dogs and cats.
Hard-to-Manage Infections: Due to its excellent tissue penetration and bioavailability, Enrofloxacin is useful for treating challenging infections such as osteomyelitis, sinus infections, otitis, peritonitis, and pleuritis. It achieves therapeutic concentrations in most body tissues except cerebrospinal fluid.
Side Effects
Common: Mild gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea or loose stools.
Less Common: Seizures (especially in animals with neurological disorders) and cartilage damage in young, growing animals when used inappropriately or at excessive doses.
Drug Interactions
Absorption of Enrofloxacin can be reduced when administered with iron supplements, antacids, or stomach protectants. Calcium-rich foods such as dairy products may also bind to the medication and decrease its efficacy. To maintain effectiveness, avoid giving these substances within two hours before or after Enrofloxacin administration.
Precautions
Contraindications: Do not administer Enrofloxacin to puppies under 28 weeks old due to risk of cartilage damage. Use caution in animals prone to seizures or those with liver or kidney disease, as dose adjustments may be necessary.
Monitoring: Monitor hydration status and kidney function during treatment, especially in older or chronically ill pets. Veterinary supervision is essential to prevent complications and ensure therapeutic efficacy.
Administration Tips
Enrofloxacin is available for oral, intramuscular, and intravenous administration in dogs, and oral administration in cats. It is well absorbed and typically given once daily to simplify dosing and ensure compliance. Always follow your veterinarian’s dosage recommendations, and report any adverse reactions promptly.
