All Purpose Nipple Ointment (APNO)
All-purpose nipple ointment (APNO) is a common compounded medication that breastfeeding mothers use for sore nipples. APNO is a combination of antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal medications to prevent bacterial and fungal infections. It is used to treat or prevent an infection in severely damaged nipples.
- Antibiotic (Mupirocin 2% ointment): It treats infections of the skin.
- Anti-inflammatory (Betamethasone 0.1% ointment): It treats swelling, itching, dryness, redness, and general irritation of the skin.
- Anti-fungal (Miconazole 2%): It treats yeast and fungal infections of the skin.
- How can I get APNO?
- You need a prescription from your healthcare provider. Rock Ridge Pharmacy can prepare this medication for you.
- How do I apply APNO?
- Apply APNO by placing a small amount onto your nipple and areola after each breastfeeding. There is no need to wash off the ointment before the next feeding. A small amount of APNO used after each breastfeeding is safe for the baby.
- How to store the ointment?
- Store the compounded ointment at room temperature and throw it away when no longer needed or after the expiration date.
- How long should I use APNO?
- Use APNO until your nipples are pain-free, then gradually decrease the amount you use for another 7 to 10 days. You should begin to see and feel results within a few days.
